EMC Corporation I started at EMC Corporation as a summer intern on June 15, 1998. I was hired to build an expert system, or part thereof, that would configure the EMC Data Manager (EDM), a data backup and restore product, for a particular customer's performance requirements. I worked with Gang Lu, also an intern from WPI , and Vladimir Shnaydman. Gang has since left EMC, but his "legacy" lives on in the database back-end and GUI of the prototype and current version of the EDM Configurator. At the end of that summer I joined EMC full-time as a member of the Software Engineering (SWE) Performance Group. This group is charged with characterizing the performance of the EMC Data Manager (EDM). I was the Computer Scientist of the group. Luckily, this is what I went to school for. I began working on new and better ways to share the information the performance group produced with the rest of SWE and EMC. This has included the refining of performance testing reports and white papers as well as the development of expert tools. I also strove to find better ways for the group to go about their job, which grows with each release and each new customer. The continuous improvement effort that resulted led to an increase of productivity measured at twentyfold that of 1998 when I started. This was by no means the result of my sole efforts. David Fedorowich and Reza Sadr contributed greatly to the effort with a data collection tool and a data extraction and analysis tools, respectively. Tools I created and/or used in this effort include a web presentation system, a graphing package for displaying test results, a database for data storage and algorithms for data analysis. Unfortunately EMC hit upon some hard times. As a result I left EMC in October 2001 and went back to school full-time to finish my Master thesis and degree. I hope things get better for EMC and SWE in particular. I have many friends there and wish them all well. As of June, 2004 most of my friends have moved from SWE into other departments of EMC or left EMC altogether. SWE is surviving or so I hear. by: Keith A.
