Qualitative Model into Casual Dependency Graph

  • To infer causal relationships, Simon and Iwasaki's causal ordering procedure is used
    • # Equations = # quantities
    • Equations must be independent
    • Equations must represent a conceptually distinct mechanism
    • For quantities controlled externally, an equation quantity = constant must be supplied
    • Find minimal complete subset : set of n equations with n quantities that does not include a subset of such equations
    • Remove these equations and their quantities from the list of equations
    • Repeat until set of equations cannot be reduced further
    • For each equation in the original set, the quantity that was reduced last is causally dependent upon all the other quantities in the equation.
    • From this a directed graph can be constructed
